In a teleportation effect the magician creates the illusion that an object moves from one location to another by unnatural and invisible means. Consequently, all teleportation effects can be considered to be extensions of the 'vanish' combined with a 'production'. Effectively a teleportation magic trick involves a combination of a vanish and production. The difference is that in a teleportation effect, the object vanished is re-produced in a significantly different location.
Popular teleportation effects include the standard of stage magic whereby an assistant is vanished from within a box or under a cloth and then reappears at the back of the theatre or in a different box; a magician dissolving a coin in one hand only to have it reappear in the other without the hands making contact with one another; the known card sealed in the envelope is no longer there when the envelope is opened but discovered in the pocket of the spectator and so on.
There is an interesting variation on the teleportation effect which is properly called a 'transposition' which, as the name implies, is when two or more objects inexplicably exchange places with one another. For example, I place a red ball under one cup, a green cube under another and a blue pyramid under a third. When I lift the cups all the objects have changed places. Essentially the 'transposition' is a simultaneous multiple teleportation.
Teleportation effects are enduring and popular and can seriously 'pack a punch' in terms of audience reaction. A mastery of teleportation effects should be a must for any serious magician regardless of her/his specialisation: be that coin magic, card magic, street magic, mentalist, whatever. Once the basic principles of teleportation effects are understood, they can with a little imagination, be applied to great effect to any of these magical disciplines.
It is also worth noting that there are dozens of teleportation magic tricks that can be performed without the use of any 'gimmicks' or specially built props purchased from a magic store. Indeed, the best and most impressive of all the teleportation effects are those that you can perform close up, using only 'sleight-of-hand' and misdirection. It's important to get a good grounding in the basic principles of magic and fundamental magic techniques before trying to do teleportation magic effects. However, once you have these principles and techniques of magic learned, you will not only be able to easily teleport objects but you'll have the skills to create your own, original teleportation magic tricks.
So first get a good grasp of the basic techniques and knowledge fundamental to all magic. Then learn two or three teleportation magic tricks (downloadable video tutorials are arguably the cheapest and easiest way to learn new tricks today). Then practice until you have it perfect. By then you will have thoroughly understood how the effects work and can go on to apply the principles to invent your own, unique effects.
If you're not sure where to go to get started, I suggest you look for a website or blog where you will find everything you need and at least most of the resources are free. Choose a site that genuinely teaches the art of magic rather than one of the many 'magic secrets exposed' type sites which come and go like spring flowers and only reveal the mechanics of tricks, rather than the real secrets of performance technique.
If you're keen to learn magic well, you'll want an established and reliable site that teaches you properly from basic principles and isn't going to disappear the day after tomorrow. Once you've found a good site, then the rest is up to you. With a little dedication and the right mindset there's nothing to stop you being able to perform fantastic teleportation magic tricks to stun your audience any time.
