As someone who has been practicing magic for 20+ years and owned a magic shop at 15 years old, I have developed a ton of great tips throughout my life. With so many kids and adults getting into magic these days, I would like to share these tips to get people started on their careers.
In this short guide, I'll give you 3 tips on "how to become a professional magician." There are hundreds more, but these are some basics every apprentice magician should follow when he's getting started.
1) Costume. I used to work at Hollywood Magic in southern California, and I was exposed to a ton of great costume concepts there. The 2 keys here are "unusual" and "colorful." Anything you pick out should definitely stand out from the rest of the magicians out there so you can make a name and image for yourself.
Of course, you can also perform in your ordinary clothes, but if you really want to have a spectacular performance, flamboyant clothes will definitely add more interest and attract attention. Another thing to keep in mind with these costumes, though: consider your comfort, the weather, and potential clothing hazards. If you're doing a flaming wallet trick, for example, you do not want to be wearing big, puffy sleeves.
2) Location. If you are busking on the street, you have to be careful not to take other people's spot. Musicians, mimes, and magicians are famously protective of their spots. Make sure you are polite and cool if you start doing magic in a new place and someone else comes along demanding that you move.
Parks and busy streets are a good place to start practicing. Think of the places that have always been the location of some street performers. Make sure that the place will abound with people, so consider shopping malls that are closed for traffic. This can be conducive for your live performance.
3) Intro. Make your performance pop with an eye-catching intro. When you are now ready to start, begin your first act with something vibrant and colorful so you will get the attention of a large crowd right away. An example might be a flame trick or something flashy, like steel rings.
When people already start to build up, perform the tricks you had practiced often, and project your voice so that even passersby will hear you and stop. Do not stop in one corner; move along the crowd so that they will see how realistic your trick is. Moreover, once you are done with all of your tricks, close your act by wittingly asking for a donation. Of course, you need to have a hat placed on the ground.
