How to Improve Your Singing by Using Correct Posture

It's hard to believe that something as simple as your posture can so deeply affect the quality of your voice. But the truth is the way you stand (or sit) while you sing plays a huge part in whether you make your audience beg for more - or beg you to stop.

Right now, pay particular attention to your shoulders. How do they feel? Are they slumped, rigid, or relaxed?

Avoid These Mistakes with Your Posture

Make sure they are not slumped. Otherwise, you won't be able to get a deep enough breath to support your voice. Without that all important support, you voice sounds weak and out of tune. Even worse, the lack of support means you'll push too hard from your throat and cause you to sound tired and hoarse.

It's just as important that you avoid the rigid military pose that makes you tense everywhere from your shoulders up. Chin up! Chest out! Shoulders high! All of this is fine in gym class or if you're in bootcamp, but when it comes to singing you will sound forced and shrill.

How to get the Ideal Singing Posture

To get proper posture, stand up straight against the wall and take a deep breath in. As you let that air out, make sure your shoulders stay lifted. Once you've achieved a "lifted" position, hold it, and work on getting more and more relaxed. You can try doing shoulder rolls, massages, and deep breathing to release as much of your tension as you can.

Keep creating mental pictures of yourself standing tall, confident, relaxed, and it will happen. Remember, the more vibrant and relaxed your posture, the stronger, warmer and more magical your voice will sound.

You must have proper posture and a strong support system working together if you really want to achieve a voice worthy of stardom. You can not have one without the other, so it is well worth your effort to master them both. Combine both techniques effectively and you'll soon notice spectacular results.
