Have you ever watch a close up magician produces a coin in front of your eyes? That is one of the most magical effect I have ever seen. But how did he do that? The most common and powerful way to produce an object is by misdirection. The magician pretends to produce something out of thin air, but in fact he secretly loads the object while spectator's attentions are directed away. Let's look at the cigar multiple production effect as an example.
The magician secretly conceals a cigar in his left hand. He then brings the attention to the cigar holding publicly in his right hand. He apparently puts the cigar from right hand to left hand and at the same time he secretly puts the concealed cigar from left hand to the right. The right hand then produces the new cigar. The principle can be applied to unlimited number of effects.
The method can be used to produce many many different objects like cards, coins, pens, glasses, CD, rings or anything you can think of. You can try it out. Do experiments. Use different objects to apply the principle and produce a trick of your own.
The next most common way to produce an object is to use speed. The magician brings out something so fast that spectators' eyes are fooled and thinks that an object has been produced. It is said that the hand is quicker than the eye, but in fact that is impossible. Some sort of help is used to achieve high speed like that.
Many kinds of mechanical devices have been used by magicians to provide the thrust they need. The most common types are pulling thread, elastic pull and the spring pull. These are convenient tools which are silent and compact. Other larger illusions can use the help of electric motor, counterweight or even steam engine. As long as the device can provide the suitable amount of force and speed that enable the object to appear at lightning speed, magicians are happy to try them out.
Usually a thread is used to pull out the object. An perfect illustration would be the appearing handkerchief effect. The handkerchief is tied by a thread that runs from the neck of a bottle to the inside and through a hole at the side to an assistant or a machine. The bottle is put on a table and the handkerchief is hidden inside a secret pocket in the table. The assistant or the machine then pulls the string at the appropriate moment extremely quickly to produce the handkerchief inside the bottle or container.
